Recently, OpenAI revealed in a Q&A session that there are currently no plans to launch an API for its video generation model, Sora. Sora can generate relatively realistic videos based on text descriptions or reference images, and has garnered significant attention. However, Romain Huet, the head of the OpenAI development team, stated that there are no plans to release an API at this stage. He mentioned during the session, "We currently have no plans for a Sora API."
The reason for this decision may be related to capacity issues. After the launch of Sora, OpenAI found that the number of users applying to use its Sora-based video creation and editing tools far exceeded expectations, forcing them to temporarily pause new user applications. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apologized for this on the social platform X, stating, "We severely underestimated the demand for Sora. It will take some time to grant access to everyone, and we are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible!"
Although OpenAI has recently reopened registrations for Sora, the decision not to prioritize the launch of an API may put it at a disadvantage in the competition with major rival Google. Google launched its video generation model Veo's API in December last year and announced this week that a follow-up version, Veo2, will also have an API available in 2025, which has received widespread attention.
Additionally, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched an API for its new video model, Nova Reel. Many startups focusing on video generation are also offering their own APIs, with one company, Runway, claiming that its API has been used by "the largest consumer technology companies in the world" to reliably generate millions of videos.
Despite Sora's strong potential in the video generation field, OpenAI is currently not ready to expand its usage. As competition intensifies, the demand for video generation tools in the market is continuously increasing, making OpenAI's future strategy worth monitoring.
