According to analyst Dylan Patel, Microsoft may invest in the new funding round for AI company Anthropic, which is the developer of the Claude model.

Patel stated on social media platform X that if this funding round is successful, Anthropic's valuation will rise to $59 billion. Currently, Anthropic's valuation stands at $18.4 billion, and last November, the company secured $4 billion in funding led by Amazon. Therefore, the likelihood of another funding round in the short term seems low.

Patel pointed out that Microsoft wants to acquire the Claude model to compete with OpenAI. OpenAI is an important partner for Microsoft, which has invested over $13 billion in it to date, raising subtle concerns in the industry about the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI. Additionally, Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei previously mentioned that the company is set to launch its flagship product, Claude Opus 3.5.

It is worth noting that during the recent GitHub Universe 2024 event, the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model was integrated with the code assistant GitHub Copilot. At the same time, GitHub announced that it will offer GitHub Copilot for free in Visual Studio Code. This suggests that Microsoft's interest in Anthropic could have a significant impact on the AI industry.

However, the market has reacted differently. Tesla CEO Elon Musk included Microsoft in an antitrust lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of unfair competition in the AI field. Meanwhile, Google has requested the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to review the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI, claiming that this collaboration could lead to unfair market competition.

When OpenAI completed its latest $6.6 billion funding round, reports indicated that it had asked investors not to fund competitors like Anthropic; however, the market response did not adhere to this request. OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar stated in an interview that they hope to ensure the ongoing development of the ecosystem, and investors are still focusing on OpenAI.

Additionally, CCS Insight predicts that in a few years, OpenAI may face difficulties in funding and might need to consider the option of selling itself to Microsoft. These dynamics undoubtedly make the competitive landscape of the AI industry more complex and tense.
