As the potential of artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector gains increasing attention, Brazilian startup Carecode is also emerging in this trend. Carecode focuses on utilizing AI agents to handle various tasks before and after medical appointments, aiming to reduce healthcare costs and improve medical outcomes.
CEO Thomaz Srougi stated in an interview that the importance of the interaction between doctors should not be overlooked, and the processes surrounding appointments are equally crucial. His medical background comes from a decade of industry experience, having founded the private healthcare service provider Dr. Consulta, where he served as chairman.

Carecode is currently in the early stages of fundraising but has already received significant support. Its $4 million seed funding round is primarily backed by well-known venture capital firms a16z and QED, along with participation from other investors. Despite the "startup winter" in the Latin American venture capital market, Srougi and his co-founder Pedro Magalhães have still managed to attract investor interest due to their past successes.
Srougi mentioned that Carecode is already conducting preliminary tests with partners, showing that its AI agents can perform most of the tasks traditionally handled by medical call centers at a low cost and can proactively fill canceled appointments. This means that healthcare institutions can focus their human resources on more complex cases, improving work efficiency. To meet local market demands, Carecode provides support for text and voice messages on the WhatsApp platform, which is particularly suitable for elderly and low-income users.
Unlike some AI healthcare startups in the United States, Carecode adopts a vertical model, focusing specifically on the healthcare industry, which gives it an advantage in customer experience. According to QED partner Camila Vieira Fernandes, this strategy helps avoid inefficiencies caused by multiple solutions, ensuring that customer needs are better met.
In Brazil, healthcare companies spend 50% of their revenue on call centers and administrative staff, totaling about $100 billion annually. The Carecode team believes that focusing on a vertical model in the healthcare industry will help them establish a competitive moat, although they may also expand into healthcare-related insurance and financial services in the future.
