Apple Inc. recently announced that it will update its newly launched artificial intelligence (AI) features rather than suspend them. This feature has generated some inaccurate news alerts on the latest iPhone, drawing significant attention from users and the media. On Monday, Apple officially responded to these concerns for the first time, stating that it is conducting a software update to further clarify which notifications are generated by the Apple Intelligence system.

The controversy originated from a complaint by the BBC last month, where Apple's AI system mistakenly claimed that the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, had committed suicide. Additionally, last Friday, Apple's AI inaccurately summarized a notification from the BBC app, stating that PDC World Darts Championship player Luke Littler had won hours before the match began, and incorrectly reported that Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal had publicly revealed his sexual orientation.

The BBC stated that the summaries generated by Apple's AI do not reflect the original content and sometimes contradict the BBC's reporting entirely. The BBC emphasized that accuracy is crucial for maintaining public trust and urged Apple to address the issue urgently. Apple responded that this update will be rolled out in the coming weeks and noted that the summary feature is intended to help users quickly view key information.

Apple also mentioned that the AI features are still in the testing phase and will continue to improve based on user feedback, with users having the option to choose whether to receive these summaries. This feature was launched in the UK last December and is currently only available on the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, as well as some iPad and Mac devices.

It is worth noting that similar AI tools are not uncommon in the industry, but their effectiveness varies. Google's AI summarization feature also faced criticism last year for generating inaccurate responses. Despite these issues occurring, Apple insists that these situations are isolated and is working hard to ensure the proper functioning of its AI features.
