Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that the company will lay off 5% of its workforce in response to the upcoming intense innovation challenges in 2025.
According to a report from Bloomberg, this decision was mentioned in an internal memo published on Meta's internal work platform. Zuckerberg stated that Meta will change its management strategy to "more quickly remove underperforming employees" so that these positions can be filled within this year with better talent.
In this round of layoffs, the number of affected employees could exceed 3,600, based on Meta's total employee count of 72,000 as of September. While the company will cut underperforming employees, Zuckerberg also mentioned that if there is an optimistic outlook on an employee's future performance, they may not be affected by the layoffs. The Wall Street Journal noted that the specific layoff list will be communicated to the relevant employees by February 10, and laid-off employees will receive "generous severance packages."
This layoff is the largest round for Meta since 2023, when the company cut 10,000 jobs in what was termed the "Year of Efficiency." Prior to that layoff, the company had conducted another round affecting 11,000 employees. Zuckerberg has stated that the "unexpected result" of reducing the workforce has been improved operational efficiency, with many tasks becoming faster.
Zuckerberg told employees in 2023 that "a leaner organization will execute top priorities more quickly." He believes that employee productivity will increase, making work more interesting and fulfilling. This is also why, in the "Year of Efficiency," Meta focused on eliminating redundant or lower-priority projects to streamline each department as much as possible.
Meta's new strategy aims to drive the company's ambitions in artificial intelligence and augmented reality by bringing in top talent.
