As the awards season approaches, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking has sparked intense discussions. This year, at least two popular films have been revealed to use voice cloning technology to enhance the performances of actors, leading to many speculations about the future of AI in the film industry.
In an interview with Red Shark News, the editor of the film "Brutalist," Davide Yangjo, disclosed that to make the Hungarian dialogues in the film sound more natural, he used an AI tool developed by the Ukrainian company Respeecher, inputting the voices of the lead actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, as well as his own voice. Yangjo stated that the application of this technology aims to create a dialogue effect that is “indistinguishable even to locals.” He emphasized that the use of AI is not intended to replace the actors' performances, but to optimize certain vocal details while preserving their performances.
Meanwhile, another film, "Emilia Perez," also employed AI technology to enhance the singing performance of actress Carla Sofia Gascon. The film's re-recording mixer Cyril Holtz stated that by using Respeecher, the production team was able to blend Gascon's vocals with those of French pop singer Camille, expanding the vocal range.
In contrast, the horror film "The Outlaw," starring Hugh Grant, explicitly expressed its opposition to AI, stating in the end credits: “No generative AI was used in the making of this film.” Such a contrast reflects the divisions and controversies surrounding AI technology in Hollywood.
In recent years, strikes by actors and writers have largely been driven by the potential threats posed by AI to the film industry. Against this backdrop, many filmmakers have begun exploring the use of AI, including renowned director Paul Schrader, who shared his experience of using ChatGPT to generate creative ideas on social media, believing that AI can quickly provide novel concepts.
As the awards season draws near, the use of AI technology may significantly impact the competition for the Oscars. Currently, Brody is considered a strong contender for Best Actor, while Gascon is expected to be the first transgender actress nominated for Best Actress. The final nominations will be announced on January 23, and the film industry will continue to pay close attention to the future direction of AI.
