Google has recently upgraded its Gemini AI assistant, with significant improvements made to multimedia processing capabilities on Android devices, as well as enhanced integration and accessibility with other applications.
The highlight of this update is the “Gemini Live” feature, which allows users to directly add images, files, and YouTube videos while conversing with the chatbot. It is important to note that this feature is currently limited to Samsung Galaxy S24, S25 phones, and Google Pixel 9 devices, with plans to gradually roll it out to other Android phones in the coming weeks.
In the near future, Google also plans to launch “Project Astra,” which will bring screen sharing and live video streaming capabilities to Gemini, similar to the existing live video support in OpenAI's ChatGPT. These new features are expected to be released first on Gemini's Android app and Samsung Galaxy S25.
In terms of app integration, Gemini's extended capabilities allow it to collaborate with more applications. In addition to already supported services like YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Spotify, the assistant will also be able to control built-in apps on the Samsung Galaxy S25, such as calendar, notes, reminders, and clock. Users can now combine multiple extensions with a single command, for example, asking Gemini to find a recipe and save it directly to Samsung Notes or Google Keep.
In a demonstration, Google showcased how Gemini can search for events and send information to others, marking a step towards making Gemini a smarter personal AI assistant. These features are available across Gemini's web, Android, and iOS platforms.
For Galaxy S25 users, they will be able to launch Gemini directly by long-pressing the side button, replacing Samsung's Bixby assistant. Additionally, users of the premium version of Gemini will welcome new in-depth research features in the mobile app, potentially facilitating more comprehensive research.
