With the rapid rise of Generative AI (GenAI), PromptLayer, a startup based in New York, has quickly entered the emerging field of prompt engineering. Prompt engineering refers to providing precise instructions to AI chatbots to obtain useful outputs. The founders of PromptLayer, Jared Zoneraich and Jonathan Pedoeem, initially developed a tool to track the prompts they used with AI chatbots, which unexpectedly received a warm market response. After two years of development, PromptLayer has successfully launched a complete prompt management platform to help businesses utilize large language models (LLMs) more effectively.

Recently, PromptLayer completed a $4.8 million seed funding round aimed at further enhancing its market competitiveness. This round was led by Ivan Bercovich, with participation from Peter Boyce II and several founders and operators in the AI field.

PromptLayer's core product is a "Prompt Registry," which serves as a content management system (CMS) providing version control features to help users manage different versions of prompts and conduct comparative testing. This allows even non-technical users to easily evaluate and optimize their prompts, achieving the best results across various applications.

Unlike many tech tool manufacturers, PromptLayer focuses on non-technical users. Jared stated that their goal is to empower professionals from various fields—such as healthcare, law, and education—to take the lead in application development, leveraging their domain knowledge for prompt engineering. PromptLayer aims to facilitate effective collaboration between these experts and engineers through its intuitive interface and tools.

Jared further pointed out that prompt engineering does not require complex programming skills; anyone can master it through simple training. He believes that market changes will prove the effectiveness of this approach, especially in the context of the growing demand for non-technical users today.

PromptLayer currently has over 10,000 users and has achieved a 13-fold increase in revenue this year, all through word-of-mouth. As more teams recognize the importance of domain experts in the AI building process, PromptLayer is moving towards becoming a pioneer in the field of prompt engineering.
