OpenAI's leadership team announced during a Discord office hours session on Friday that the company plans to eventually integrate its AI video generation tool, Sora, directly into the popular ChatGPT application, further expanding its AI creation ecosystem.

Currently, Sora is only available through a dedicated web application launched by OpenAI in December. Users can access the AI video model to generate movie clips up to 20 seconds long. Rohan Sahai, OpenAI's product lead for Sora, stated that the company is actively exploring how to bring Sora into ChatGPT, combining the two products, but declined to provide a specific timeline.

Sahai noted that the eventual Sora version within ChatGPT might not offer the same level of control as the standalone web application, such as the ability to edit and splice videos. He explained that one reason for launching Sora as a separate web application was to maintain the simplicity of ChatGPT.

This move could be a strategic effort by OpenAI to attract more users to ChatGPT, and potentially incentivize users to upgrade to premium ChatGPT subscription tiers that may offer higher video generation limits.

In addition to ChatGPT integration, Sahai also revealed the company is "keen to build" a standalone mobile application for Sora, stating that the Sora team is actively recruiting mobile engineers. Simultaneously, OpenAI is developing an AI image generator powered by Sora technology, potentially allowing users to create more realistic photos than the current DALL-E 3 model.

Since its launch, OpenAI has expanded Sora's web experience, providing users with more ways to browse community-generated videos. Sahai added that the company is also developing a new version of the Sora Turbo model, which currently powers the Sora web application.
