OpenAI recently announced a significant update to its macOS ChatGPT application, introducing a new feature that allows developers to interact with and edit code directly within integrated development environments (IDEs) like Xcode and VS Code. This feature aims to boost developer coding efficiency and streamline their programming workflows.
As technology advances, developer work environments are constantly evolving. With this update, users can summon ChatGPT using the CMD+Z shortcut. The system automatically identifies the active editor and provides context-relevant assistance. This means developers can interact with ChatGPT in real-time while coding, adjusting and optimizing code, even tweaking file color settings, significantly enhancing the development experience.
The update also introduces an "auto-apply" mode, enabling ChatGPT to directly edit code without requiring additional user authorization. This allows developers to focus on creation rather than switching between tools. A video shared by OpenAI team member Alexander Embiricos on social media demonstrates this functionality, showcasing its effectiveness.
This update is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, with Enterprise, Education, and free users gaining access next week. Windows users will also receive this feature "soon." OpenAI plans to gradually expand this convenient functionality to more Mac applications and roll it out to all Mac desktop users, including free users. It's foreseeable that ChatGPT will become a more comprehensive desktop assistant, helping developers work more efficiently.
Meanwhile, the industry anticipates a more intelligent Siri AI from Apple to better assist developers with Xcode projects. However, reports suggest that a conversational Siri might not be available until 2027.
