Google announced a major upgrade to Gmail's search functionality on Thursday, incorporating artificial intelligence to optimize email search results. This new feature considers factors such as recency, click frequency, and contact usage to help users find the emails they need faster.
Previously, Gmail search displayed emails containing keywords in chronological order. Google stated: "With this update, the email you're looking for is more likely to appear at the top of your search results—saving you valuable time and helping you find important information more easily."
In addition to the new "Most relevant" default sorting method, Google has added a toggle switch allowing users to freely choose between "Most relevant" and the traditional "Latest" sorting method. This update has been rolled out globally to personal Google accounts, supporting the web version as well as Android and iOS Gmail apps, with plans to expand to business users in the future.
This update is part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve Gmail, aiming to enhance its competitiveness against Apple's Mail app. Recently, Gmail has also introduced several innovative features, such as Gemini-powered calendar event additions, inbox "summary cards," and an in-app Gemini chat function allowing users to directly discuss their inbox content.
