In the age of technological and industrial convergence, advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics are revolutionizing traditional manufacturing. Recently, German automaker BMW and American AI robotics company Figure have made significant progress in their collaboration, successfully integrating the Figure02 humanoid robot into their production line. This humanoid robot has achieved a remarkable increase in BMW's production efficiency, boasting a 400% speed improvement and a sevenfold increase in success rate.

The Figure02 robot has garnered widespread industry attention for its exceptional operational capabilities. According to Brett Adcock, Founder and CEO of Figure, the robot can perform up to 1000 operations daily. This operational frequency is expected to increase further with the addition of more robots and continued data collection. A video showcases the Figure02's performance in high-precision tasks, demonstrating its ability to precisely place a difficult-to-handle metal piece into a slot less than 1 centimeter wide, highlighting its remarkable accuracy and reliability.

This technology makes complex operations significantly more efficient. Especially when handling difficult-to-manipulate metal components, the Figure02 effectively avoids collisions with fixtures, greatly enhancing the safety and smoothness of the production process. Adcock points out that the cycle time for this task has been reduced by four minutes, indicating that the robot's performance in high-difficulty operations surpasses previous static tabletop tasks by a factor of ten.

BMW and Figure's collaboration began earlier this year, with successful testing at their Spartanburg plant. This marks BMW's first use of humanoid robots on its production line. While BMW previously stated it had no set timeline for robot integration, recent news suggests the Figure humanoid robot is expected to return to the BMW factory in January 2025.

It's worth noting that Figure AI recently completed a $675 million Series B funding round, with investors including OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Jeff Bezos. This brings Figure's current valuation to $2.6 billion. Adcock also mentioned that the Figure02's speed still has significant room for improvement, and more humanoid robots are expected to be deployed in real-world environments before 2025, driving further innovation in manufacturing.
