The Tianjin Municipal Education Commission recently issued guidelines on strengthening AI education in primary and secondary schools, outlining a plan to implement AI education across the city. Starting from the fall semester of 2025, all schools at the compulsory education stage will offer a local curriculum titled "Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence" to fourth and eighth graders.
This policy aims to better meet the educational needs arising from technological advancements and improve students' AI literacy. To this end, Tianjin will conduct pilot programs in selected areas and schools during the spring semester of 2025 to gather experience and prepare for city-wide implementation. By 2028, AI education is expected to be widespread in all primary and secondary schools, establishing a high-standard, high-quality curriculum and evaluation system that aligns with students' developmental stages and the demands of the times.
According to the guidelines, lower primary grades will focus on perception and experience, helping students grasp basic AI concepts. Upper primary and junior high school will emphasize understanding and applying AI technologies, gradually enhancing students' practical skills. High school students will be encouraged to undertake project creation and explore cutting-edge applications to broaden their horizons and practical abilities.
Regarding the specific curriculum arrangement, the "Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence" course for fourth and eighth graders will be scheduled for one class period per week, totaling no less than 30 class periods per grade. High school students can choose to study AI-related modules within their information technology and general technology courses to improve their comprehensive quality and practical skills.
