IBM recently unveiled its latest mainframe, the IBM z17, powered by the new IBM Telum II processor. Five years in the making, the z17 boasts significant AI capabilities across hardware, software, and system operations. IBM states its design goal was to "reshape large-scale AI computing."
While many consider mainframes relics of a bygone computing era, they remain crucial for large enterprises handling massive datasets. Global industries, including banking, insurance, retail, and telecommunications, continue to rely on IBM mainframes to meet their complex data processing needs.
The z17 is explicitly designed with AI capabilities at its core. IBM claims the z17 can handle 50% more AI inference operations daily than its predecessor, the z16. It supports over 250 use cases, such as managing chatbots and mitigating loan risk.
Key AI features of the z17 processor include:
- **Enhanced Inference Capabilities**: With increased clock speed, computing power, and a 40% cache boost, the z17 can perform over 450 billion inference operations daily with a one-millisecond response time.
- **Accelerated Computing**: The IBM Spyre™ accelerator, launching in Q4 2025, will further enhance the Telum II processor's capabilities, enabling the mainframe to run generative features such as virtual assistants.
- **Improved User Experience**: The z17 integrates AI assistants and agents, such as IBM watsonx Code Assistant and watsonx Assistant, aiming to enhance the user experience for IT teams and developers. watsonx Assistant will also integrate with Z Operations Unite, providing real-time system data to support AI-driven event detection and resolution.
Ross Mauri, General Manager, IBM Z and LinuxONE, stated: "The industry is rapidly recognizing that the value of AI is inextricably linked to the infrastructure it runs on. With z17, we're embedding AI into the core of the enterprise, providing the necessary software, processing power, and storage to get AI into production quickly. Furthermore, businesses can leverage their vast untapped data assets for AI in a secure and cost-effective manner."
