Mira Murati's startup, "The Machine Intelligence Lab," founded by the former OpenAI CTO, recently welcomed two heavyweight advisors from her former employer: Bob McGrew, former OpenAI Chief Research Officer, and Alec Radford, former OpenAI researcher. Their contributions inject new vitality and technical expertise into the company, and they will collaborate on developing AI tools tailored to individual needs.
McGrew joined OpenAI in 2017, holding various technical roles, including staff engineer, VP of Research, and Chief Research Officer. He left OpenAI in September 2024, planning a period of rest. Radford departed OpenAI late last year to focus on independent research. He was the lead author of the groundbreaking research on Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), the core technology behind many of OpenAI's popular products (like ChatGPT). Radford also contributed to the development of several GPT models, as well as the speech recognition model Whisper and the image generation model DALL-E.
"The Machine Intelligence Lab" currently maintains a low profile regarding its research direction and product roadmap. In February, the company revealed its focus on developing AI tools that "better meet people's unique needs and goals," aiming to create more understandable, customizable, and powerful AI systems. Murati leads the company as CEO, with OpenAI co-founder John Schulman serving as Chief Scientist and Barrett Zoph as CTO, the latter having overseen model fine-tuning at OpenAI.
Murati left OpenAI last October, concluding a six-year tenure. Her roles at OpenAI included VP of Applied AI and Partnerships, and she was promoted to CTO in 2022, overseeing the development of projects like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex, which have had a significant industry impact. Reports suggest Murati is in talks with undisclosed venture capital firms, aiming to raise over $100 million to fuel "The Machine Intelligence Lab"'s growth.
With the addition of these two experts, "The Machine Intelligence Lab" is moving closer to its goal of creating personalized AI tools, promising more tailored and intelligent solutions for users in the future.
