Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, recently launched its flagship product, the Grok3 model, via API. This model aims to compete with other AI products like OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google's Gemini. Grok3 boasts image analysis capabilities and the ability to answer questions, providing multiple functionalities for Musk's social media platform, X. Notably, X was acquired by xAI in March of this year, further strengthening their integration.
xAI currently offers two Grok3 models via API: Grok3 and Grok3Mini. Grok3 is priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, while Grok3Mini costs $0.30 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Faster versions of both Grok3 and Grok3Mini are also available at a higher price. Compared to competitors, Grok3's pricing is not inexpensive, being comparable to Anthropic's Claude3.7Sonnet and still higher than Google's newly released Gemini 2.5 Pro.
Regarding Grok3's performance, users have found that its context window support is smaller than previously advertised. The actual maximum supported number of tokens is 131,072, approximately 97,500 words – significantly lower than the 1 million tokens xAI claimed at the end of February. Earlier versions of Grok were positioned as capable of handling various controversial topics, especially on social media, with freedom of expression and no avoidance of political issues.
However, Grok3 remains somewhat cautious on certain political issues, failing to fully deliver on Musk's promise of a more politically neutral model. Research suggests Grok leans towards left-leaning viewpoints when addressing topics such as transgender rights and diversity. Musk has stated that the model will be improved to reduce this bias. However, it remains unclear whether xAI has achieved this in practice and what the long-term implications might be.
