Netflix is testing a new search function powered by OpenAI that will allow users to find content using more specific and personalized terms, including searching by mood. This innovative search tool will help users conduct more complex queries that "go beyond genre or actor names."
Currently, this feature is only being tested as an optional feature for a limited number of iOS users in Australia and New Zealand. Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou confirmed a Bloomberg report to The Verge, stating that the test will expand to the US "in the coming weeks and months." However, there are currently no plans to roll it out beyond iOS.
"The feature is still in its early stages, and we're in a learn-and-listen phase with this beta," Zhou said.
Netflix is no stranger to AI applications. Co-CEO Greg Peters previously told The Verge editor Nilay Patel: "We have a long history, going back over two decades, of using machine learning and AI in our recommendation systems. We've always believed that it's our job to proactively understand areas of technological innovation. How do we leverage those innovations to serve creators, allowing them to tell their stories in more engaging ways, while simultaneously providing a better user experience for our members?"
