Samsung Electronics and Google Cloud have announced an expanded partnership to launch Ballie, a new AI home companion robot that integrates Google Cloud's generative AI technology. Scheduled for consumer release this summer, Ballie enables natural conversational interactions, assisting users with home management tasks such as adjusting lighting, greeting visitors, personalizing schedules, and setting reminders.
Ballie leverages Gemini's multimodal capabilities and Samsung's proprietary language model to process and understand various inputs, including audio and voice, visual data from its camera, and environmental sensor data. This allows Ballie to adapt its behavior and responses in real-time. For example, if you're unsure what to wear to work in the morning, you can ask Ballie for advice. You could ask: "Hey, Ballie, how do I look?" Ballie can then offer style suggestions based on your outfit, such as suggesting new accessories or adding a brightly colored shirt.
Thanks to Gemini's enhanced reasoning capabilities, Ballie can assist with home management and also focus on user health and well-being. For instance, if you tell Ballie, "I feel very tired today," Ballie can utilize Gemini's foundation on Google Search to provide personalized recommendations for improving energy levels, including sharing suggestions from trusted sources to help increase exercise, optimize sleep environments, or monitor sleep patterns.
This collaboration announcement builds on the successful integration of Gemini into Samsung's Galaxy S24 series last year. With Ballie, Samsung and Google Cloud are exploring how to extend their generative AI partnership to a broader range of devices.
Kim Young-jae, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business, stated: "Through this collaboration, Samsung and Google Cloud are redefining the role of AI in the home. By combining the power of Gemini's multimodal reasoning with Samsung's AI capabilities in Ballie, we are leveraging the power of open collaboration to usher in a new era of personalized AI companions—one that moves with you, anticipates your needs, and interacts in a more dynamic and meaningful way."
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, also commented: "With Gemini on Google Cloud, Samsung is showcasing how to deploy generative AI at scale, directly integrating it into their popular products. This expanded collaboration with Samsung underscores our commitment to providing reliable, enterprise-grade AI to create lasting value for our customers and their customers."
