OpenAI recently released a powerful integration for its macOS ChatGPT app, streamlining tasks like searching, writing, and coding. This update, covered by outlets like AppleInsider, marks a significant advancement in ChatGPT's interaction with macOS applications.
Introduced in March as "Work with Apps on macOS," this feature enhances ChatGPT's interaction with macOS applications. Available to all users, regardless of subscription status, the latest version (1.2025.057) allows users to easily initiate interaction with the current application by pressing Option + Space or clicking the ChatGPT icon in the menu bar. A new "Work with Apps" button in compatible applications provides additional options.
The integration supports various IDEs, including Apple's Xcode, and third-party tools like Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, and Android Studio. It also works with macOS's built-in applications such as Notes, TextEdit, and Terminal. After each interaction, ChatGPT automatically displays a summary on the main interface for easy review and application.
Coding support is substantial. Users of Visual Studio Code need to install a dedicated extension. Code modifications can be made directly within the IDE, with Command-Z readily available for undo. ChatGPT offers code modification suggestions, allowing users to review the differences before implementation, ensuring informed decisions.
Users can disable this feature in the macOS ChatGPT settings by turning off the "Enable Work with Apps" option, easily removing the associated buttons. While the new version features improved voice control, the highly anticipated voice code editing is not yet supported. However, voice control can still be enabled via the wavy icon in the chat bar.
ChatGPT's chat history is stored in the user's OpenAI account by default until deleted. Even after deletion, this data is retained for 30 days before permanent removal. The new version introduces a "Temporary Chat" function, allowing users to start fresh conversations, ignoring previous history.
