Recently, the 70-minute Mandarin AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) film Sea Queen Ching Shih, produced by Singaporean film production company FizzDragon, officially premiered in Singaporean cinemas, becoming the world's first AI-generated feature film to receive a commercial theatrical release. The film is based on the 18th-century Chinese legendary female pirate Ching Shih, whose character inspired the creation of "Madam Ching" in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
Compared to traditional film production, the application of AI technology in this film significantly lowered the creative barrier. The FizzDragon team stated that AI tools eliminate the need to consider uncontrollable factors such as weather and actor availability, and also remove the processes of traditional filming such as location scouting, set design, and lighting arrangement. The system can generate a massive amount of scene material in a short time, significantly reducing production time and costs. This feature provides a fast track for young creators with limited resources to realize their artistic conceptions and offers new ideas for the industrialization of film production.
Despite the powerful potential of AI technology, FizzDragon emphasizes that it cannot completely replace human creativity, especially in core creative aspects such as scriptwriting and emotional expression, which still require human intervention. The team leader pointed out that AI should be viewed as a tool to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and lower the industry's entry barrier, not as a threat. Currently, FizzDragon is expanding its AI applications in the film and television content field. Besides signing a contract with Douban novelist Jia Yang to create the AIGC web series Lonely Notes, they also plan to launch a series of short films based on Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas) and a science fiction work titled Lunar Colony.
