Microsoft has unveiled two self-developed artificial intelligence (AI) chips this week: Maia 100 and CobAlt. Manufactured by TSMC using a 5-nanometer process technology, these chips are expected to be deployed in Microsoft Azure data centers next year, enhancing the energy efficiency of services. Maia 100 serves as a dedicated AI accelerator, while CobAlt is a general-purpose chip based on the ARM architecture. Microsoft's move aims to bolster the energy efficiency of generative AI products and reduce costs. The company is striving to gain an edge in the AI and cloud computing sectors by leveraging its own chips for performance and cost advantages, and reducing reliance on any single supplier.
