Recently, Microsoft announced a new AI tool at their Ignite conference, named Azure AI Speech, which can generate new avatars and voices, or replicate users' existing appearances and speech patterns. This technology is trained using human images and allows users to input scripts for realistic avatars created by AI to read aloud. Despite Microsoft's emphasis on various limitations and safeguards to prevent misuse of the tool, the announcement has still sparked concerns about the potential exacerbation of deepfakes. Critics have dubbed this tool a "deepfake generator," suggesting it could be used to replicate individuals' faces and voices, creating false content. Microsoft has responded by stating that the tool is a restricted access utility, requiring approval from Microsoft for use, and mandating disclosure when using AI to produce avatars or voices.
