The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently passed a resolution with a 3-0 vote, granting itself the authority to use compulsory procedures in investigations involving products and services that claim to be driven by AI. The Commission emphasized that the new powers will accelerate investigations, prevent AI abuse, and particularly focus on unfair practices such as fraud and privacy infringement. To guard against voice Deepfakes, the FTC launched the "FTC Voice Cloning Challenge" and offered a reward of $25,000, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary tools and policies. Additionally, the FTC warned that it will crack down severely on developers who claim to use AI, especially in cases involving fraud, deception, or manipulation of consumers.
