The Beijing Internet Court has rendered a first-instance judgment in a copyright infringement dispute involving AI-generated images. This marks the first case in the field of AI-generated images concerning copyright. The court held that AI-generated images possess originality and reflect human intellectual input, thus qualifying as works and being protected under copyright law. The court further emphasized that the generation of images by artificial intelligence models is essentially a form of human creativity utilizing tools, and it is humans, not the AI models, who contribute intellectual input throughout the creative process. Therefore, as long as human originality and intellectual input are demonstrated, the output should be recognized as a work and be entitled to copyright protection. This ruling holds significant implications for the protection of copyright in the field of AI-generated images.
