Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Chief Technology Officer of Meta, announced the largest restructuring of the company's hardware division since its rebranding to Reality Labs in 2020.
All teams within Reality Labs will be consolidated into two groups: a central "Metaverse" organization, now including the Quest headset series; and a new "Wearables" organization, which covers Meta's other hardware efforts, including the smart glasses developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban.
This restructuring implies that some employees at Reality Labs have been laid off, a fact confirmed by multiple sources. Although the exact number of layoffs is unclear (Meta declined to comment), it is reported that the number is relatively small, with a focus on the teams within Reality Labs, as some leadership positions have become redundant due to this new structure.
Meta's CTO stated that the latest smart glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban "have been much more popular than we anticipated." This indicates Meta's confidence in the development of the wearables sector and hopes that through this restructuring, it can better promote its growth in this area.
While layoffs have caused distress for some employees, they are also necessary adjustments made by the company to improve efficiency and respond to market changes. With the restructuring of the hardware division, Meta will be better positioned to address the challenges and opportunities in the virtual reality and wearables sectors, bringing users more innovative products and experiences.
