Google has recently announced a series of AI-powered features based on Gemini for Gmail, aiming to revolutionize users' email management experience. This move not only marks a significant upgrade for Gmail but also reflects Google's continuous advancement in the field of AI applications.
In the web version of Gmail, users will be introduced to a new Gemini sidebar. This powerful AI assistant can perform tasks such as summarizing email threads and drafting new emails. Google states that this tool will not only provide proactive suggestions but also support user-initiated queries. Notably, it will leverage Google's most advanced AI models, including Gemini 1.5 Pro.
Mobile users will not be left out either. Google plans to integrate Gemini's ability to summarize email threads into the Gmail mobile app, enhancing mobile office efficiency.
However, these enticing new features are not available to all users. Only paying Gemini users can enjoy these services, including Google Workspace customers with Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons, Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on users, and Google One AI Premium subscribers.
Beyond Gmail, Google will also introduce Gemini features in the sidebars of Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, fulfilling its promise made at the I/O conference last month. Additionally, Gmail has teased more upcoming AI features, such as "contextual smart replies."
While these AI features are highly anticipated, Google also reminds users not to rely on them too heavily. Given the potential for AI to generate "hallucinations," users should still exercise caution and verification when sending important emails.
