London-based AI startup Synthesia has announced a significant update to its platform, designed to provide a comprehensive suite for businesses to accelerate their video-centric communication initiatives.

Synthesia 2.0 is officially launched, introducing several key features, including full-body virtual avatars capable of various actions and interactive video experiences. Additionally, a new AI screen recording tool has been announced to streamline the process of creating content such as operational guides for employees.

This development follows Synthesia's previous major update with expressive virtual avatars. However, it's important to note that not all features will be rolled out immediately. Some will be available next month, while others will be introduced over the coming months.

The next step is to enhance corporate communication.

Looking back to 2017, Synthesia was founded by a team of AI researchers and entrepreneurs from Stanford University, Technical University of Munich, and Cambridge University. Their goal was simple: to provide businesses with a way to quickly move away from monotonous text-based content and towards more engaging and appealing video content. Over the years, they have developed an end-to-end platform where businesses can create customized AI voices and virtual avatars (even selecting from existing ones) and combine them with pre-written or AI-generated scripts to produce AI videos.

Today, Synthesia is adopted by over 55,000 businesses, including Zoom, DuPont, Heineken, and Electrolux. The company has also significantly enhanced its AI virtual avatars, making them more realistic and expressive. Just a few weeks ago, it introduced a new Express-1 model, enabling virtual avatars to understand the context and emotions in text and adjust their tone and facial expressions to convey the message.

With the latest update, the company continues to improve its virtual avatars. Essentially, to enhance the narrative capabilities of digital characters, the company is expanding their range of movements. This will enhance the personality of the virtual avatars, allowing them to use the full range of human body language to tell compelling stories, including hand gestures.

According to Dan Vlad Corbeanu, Synthesia's Head of Product Marketing, the improved virtual avatars are the result of training multiple large video and audio foundation models with data collected from thousands of people worldwide. He added that these avatars will also be fully controllable: users can specify the appearance of the avatars through images and videos, and create animations using skeleton sequences, but this is just part of the avatar upgrade.

Synthesia has also enhanced the ability for users to create personal AI virtual avatars using their webcams or smartphone cameras with natural backgrounds. CEO Victor Riparbelli noted that this is particularly useful when users want to appear more authentic, such as during tutorials. Recorded personal virtual avatars will also have better lip synchronization and more natural speech, along with the ability to translate speech into over 30 languages.
