South Korea's major mobile operator LG Uplus officially launched its generative artificial intelligence model ixi-GEN on Tuesday, entering the competitive arena with its two larger rivals, KT Corp. and SK Telecom Co., in the race to lead the B2B generative AI market.

LG Uplus stated that its generative AI is a small large language model (sLLM) trained on its communication and platform data, utilizing the ultra-large-scale multi-modal AI Exaone developed by LG AI Research, a subsidiary of the LG Group.

Unlike general LLMs such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, sLLMs are smaller in size and focus on specific industries or businesses. As a lighter LLM, ixi-GEN can be fine-tuned more quickly to better perform specific tasks or behaviors for industry-specific uses. It offers high security as it can be installed on local servers rather than in the cloud.

According to the company, it is also less likely to face copyright infringement lawsuits as it is trained on clean data provided by Exaone. LG Uplus plans to apply ixi-GEN to eight of its services this year, including chat agents and mobile store consultant services, before offering it to the B2B market. Its generative AI is a telecommunications-specific AI model that can be quickly applied to telecom services.

In addition to the generative AI tool, the company also introduced an AI development platform called ixi Solution, enabling ordinary people to use AI in the real world.
