As Gates explained, even in the worst-case scenario, the additional electricity contribution from data centers would be only 6%, and more likely only 2% to 2.5%. He said, "The key question is whether artificial intelligence can accelerate the reduction in energy consumption beyond 6%. The answer is undoubtedly yes."

 Gates also believes that the increased demand for electricity will encourage technology companies to invest more in green electricity, "to show that they are using green energy." However, research by Goldman Sachs and the Electricity Research Institute predicts that by 2030, data centers may account for up to 9% of electricity consumption in the United States.
