The application of 3D content creation in fields such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), gaming, and film industries is becoming increasingly widespread, with its significance growing steadily. With the development of diffusion models and large-scale 3D object datasets, significant progress has been made in the generation of 3D base models. In this work, researchers have proposed a new framework named Animate3D, designed to animate any static 3D model. Animate3D is an innovative framework jointly developed by the Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the DAMO Academy of Alibaba Group.

The core ideas of this framework include two aspects: Firstly, a new Multi-View Video Diffusion Model (MV-VDM) is proposed, based on multi-view rendering of static 3D objects and trained on a large-scale high-quality multi-view video dataset (MV-Video). Secondly, leveraging MV-VDM, a framework combining reconstruction and 4D Score Distillation Sampling (4D-SDS) is introduced, which animates 3D objects using multi-view video diffusion priors.

Specifically, MV-VDM designs a new spatio-temporal attention module, enhancing spatial and temporal consistency by integrating 3D and video diffusion models. Additionally, they use multi-view rendering of static 3D models as a condition to preserve their identity.

To animate 3D models, researchers propose an effective two-stage process: initially reconstructing movements directly from the generated multi-view videos, then refining appearance and movements through the introduced 4D-SDS. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show that Animate3D significantly outperforms previous methods. Excitingly, they promise to publicly release data, code, and models.
