Recently, there have been numerous AI-generated prank videos on platforms like Bilibili and Douyin. Since the release of Kelin for public use, the internet has seen a surge of creative prank videos, ranging from simple edits like Er Kang wearing sunglasses and Zi Wei eating a hamburger, to more elaborate scenes where middle-aged youths fighting at the Peak of Purple Forbidden City suddenly transform into a loving embrace.
Viewers have reacted with astonishment, exclaiming that the world has gone mad and become unrecognizable. Beyond the humor, some users have also explored more tender applications of AI. For instance, AIbase previously shared a tutorial on using AI to "resurrect" old photos from 40 years ago, which is one of the more touching and meaningful uses of AI video. Many netizens have used Kelin to bring old photographs back to life.
Previously, the "resurrection" of old photos was limited to single images. Recently, new trends have emerged on Douyin, where AI technology allows two photos from different times and settings to interact. These videos mainly include scenarios like "AI resurrecting loved ones for a reunion" and "interacting with one's childhood self across time."
Today, AIbase will primarily share how to create such videos.
I. Restoration of Old Photos
Old photos often suffer from damage or blurriness. AI high-definition restoration tools can be used for preliminary processing. If you're unsure which tool to use, you can visit AIbase's tool navigation: https://www.aibase.com/tools
II. Coloring Old Photos
Most old photos are in black and white and require colorization. For this, you can use the Palette.fm website, which offers AI-based colorization services.

AIbase has previously detailed how to colorize black and white photos in the tutorial "AI Brings Photos to Life! The Viral AI 'Resurrection' of 40-Year-Old Photos Made Easy with Your Phone! Includes a Kelin Step-by-Step Guide", so I won't go into further detail here.
III. Combining Two Photos for Interaction
To interact with old photos, they must be on the same image. Therefore, we need to merge the new and old photos. You can freely choose from tools like Meitu, Magic Photo Studio, or Photoshop for this task. (Since I don't have an old photo, I'm using an image generated by MJ for demonstration. Real photos will look more authentic.)
After combining the photos, there will be a noticeable boundary due to different backgrounds.
If there's a boundary, AI video creation can be problematic. Here, a blending process is needed. I used Photoshop's healing brush tool for simple smudging. (If you don't have Photoshop, you can use an erasing tool from Meitu.)
IV. Bringing Photos to Life
For this step, Runway Gen3 members can directly use Runway for the best results. Here, AIbase is using the Kelin alternative for testing.
Open the Kelin web version: https://top.aibase.com/tool/keling-ai
Select image-to-video, and input simple actions like patting the head, looking at each other, or kissing.
Wait about 5 minutes, and you'll get a video like this.
For better display on Douyin, you can place the comparison photo at the top. This can be directly imported into Jianying. The video ratio can be set to 3:4, arranging the landscape photos vertically.
The effect is as follows:
Since my photo is AI-generated, the effect is slightly inferior to real photos. At the end of the video, I included a comparison with a real photo to demonstrate the smoothness of the interaction. To avoid issues with肖像权, the faces are slightly obscured. You can try it out for yourself!
