Spotify users can now request music playback using natural language through Google's generative AI assistant, Gemini. According to a report from 9to5Google, this feature first appeared in the code of the Google app in June and is now gradually being rolled out to compatible Android devices.
With this extension, users can find and play music by song title, artist, album name, or playlist name. However, currently, Gemini does not support creating playlists or radio stations on Spotify. It's important to note that if users have linked multiple music services (such as YouTube Music), they need to specify which service they want Gemini to use during the initial request. After that, Gemini will default to the last selected service.
Following the launch of WhatsApp support in October, Spotify has become the second non-Google app to receive support for the Gemini extension.
According to Google's extension support page, users need to link their Spotify and Google accounts and enable Gemini Apps Activity to use this feature. This setting will allow the AI to query data saved for up to 72 hours. However, the Spotify extension is currently not available in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS, and it only works when Gemini's language setting is set to English.
