Apple Inc. has announced that its Apple Intelligence has integrated OpenAI's ChatGPT functionality, which is now available on iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia operating systems.
This means that users can experience a more powerful intelligent assistant service on their iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices powered by Apple Silicon. ChatGPT works alongside Siri to handle more complex tasks, providing users with a more efficient experience.
In this update, ChatGPT can directly collaborate with Siri and Apple's text editing tools. When Siri determines that ChatGPT can better fulfill a user's request, it will automatically forward the request to OpenAI's system, provided the user has enabled this feature. Users do not need to register for an OpenAI account to use these new features. Even without an account, OpenAI will not save user requests or use them to train AI, and the system will hide the user's IP address to ensure the privacy of the sessions.
However, the recent demonstration did not bring many surprises. Although OpenAI showcased the ability to generate playlists through ChatGPT, users still need to manually import these playlists into Spotify for actual playback. The demonstration on the Mac platform was also quite basic, limited to showing how ChatGPT handles PDF files.
It is worth mentioning that the launch of the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence was later than expected, originally planned for last fall, but due to slow development progress, many features showcased earlier are not expected to be officially released until 2025.
In addition to the ChatGPT integration, Apple has introduced several new AI features in iOS 18.2, including "Image Playground" for creative photo editing in messages, "Genmoji" for creating personalized emojis, "Image Wand" for turning sketches into images, and a writing tool that makes text more vivid through simple descriptions. These features can be accessed via the camera control side button and are integrated with Google Lens to recognize objects, while GPT-4 helps to interpret complex charts.
Apple plans to update Siri in the coming months or years to understand more personal context and support hundreds of new commands. Although EU regulations have limited the rollout of these AI features in the European market, they are expected to be available to European users by April 2025.
At the same time, OpenAI is continually updating its products, introducing new refinement methods and the final model Sora, which is also unavailable in the EU due to regulatory reasons.
