Meta has announced a significant update to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, introducing several new AI-based features, including real-time conversation and language translation. These new features are now available to early access users in the United States and Canada, who can download the latest firmware version v11.

The most notable feature in this update is the "Real-Time AI," which was first showcased at the Meta Connect developer conference last fall. This feature allows users to have ongoing conversations with Meta's AI assistant without needing to say "Hey, Meta" each time to wake it up. Users can interrupt the AI at any time to ask follow-up questions or change the topic. Additionally, users can inquire about their surroundings while wearing the glasses, such as asking what is nearby.

With its real-time AI video capabilities, Meta has become a leader in the smart glasses market. This technology allows users to ask Meta's AI for information about items they are viewing, enabling instant access to information. Similarly, Google is also planning to launch AR glasses, although a specific release date has not yet been announced.

In addition to real-time AI video, firmware v11 introduces a real-time translation feature that supports instant translation between English and Spanish, French, and Italian. When users converse with speakers of these languages, the glasses will translate the other person's speech into English through an open-ear speaker and display the text on the user's paired phone.

Furthermore, this update includes Shazam support, allowing users to simply say "Hey, Meta, identify this song," and the glasses will attempt to identify the music that is currently playing. While Meta is confident in these new features, it reminds users that real-time AI and translation may encounter errors, and it will continue to learn and improve to enhance the user experience.

It's worth noting that in November of last year, Meta rolled out a major update for Ray-Ban Meta, introducing some AI capabilities to users in France, Italy, and Spain. According to a recent report by EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban Meta has become the best-selling glasses brand in 60% of stores across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
