Recently, the parents of Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher and whistleblower, expressed concerns about his death and called for the FBI to intervene in the investigation. Balaji was found in his apartment in San Francisco on November 26, with police initially ruling his death a suicide. However, his parents are dissatisfied with this conclusion and believe the San Francisco Police Department is unable to conduct a thorough investigation.

Balaji's mother, Poornima Ramarao, expressed her feelings at a vigil held in Milpitas, stating that she felt numb and found the grief of losing her only son unbearable. Ramarao mentioned that after being unable to contact her son for three days, she reported him missing to the police. When the police arrived, they discovered Balaji had passed away, and the initial investigation found no suspicious signs.
According to the police, Balaji's death was ruled a suicide, and a gun was found at the scene. However, his parents insist that Balaji had no mental health issues and did not leave a suicide note. His father, Balaji Ramamurthy, recalled their last conversation on November 22, noting that Balaji had just returned from a vacation in Los Angeles and was in good spirits, having sent many photos.
Balaji started working at OpenAI in 2020, contributing to a project called WebGPT, which paved the way for the development of ChatGPT. He resigned from OpenAI in August of this year alongside co-founder John Schulman, publicly accusing generative AI developers, including OpenAI, of copyright infringement. In an interview with The New York Times, he stated that OpenAI violated copyright laws, claiming that products like ChatGPT were harming the internet.
OpenAI expressed sorrow over the incident and has been in contact with Balaji's parents to offer support. During the vigil, Balaji's friends mentioned his advocacy for the rights of creators and emphasized that AI cannot replace human creators.
Balaji's parents described their son as a genius from a young age, possessing extraordinary intelligence and character. They stated that they cannot understand how such an exceptional child could take this path and called for a more comprehensive investigation into his death to seek the truth.
