A new artificial intelligence startup, Borderless AI, is focused on making the human resources department the next major battleground for enterprise AI applications. Since entering the market last year, Borderless AI has attracted approximately $32 million in seed funding, including $5 million in strategic investments from participants such as Aidan Gomez and Ivan Zhang, co-founders of Cohere. Willson Cross, the company's co-founder and CEO, stated, "In the future, every HR department will have an AI assistant to manage all aspects of human resources, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this field."

Based in Toronto, Borderless AI focuses on developing AI-driven solutions, aiming to carve out a niche among traditional HR software providers like Workday and ADP. Currently, Borderless AI has attracted several multinational companies as clients, including Dunlop Sporting Goods, which uses HRGPT technology to manage employee onboarding processes across 17 global offices.

Unlike general AI chatbots, HRGPT combines real-time web searches with access to company internal data, enabling it to perform a variety of tasks, from generating employment agreements to tracking leave requests and managing international expense reimbursements. Cross noted in an interview, "Our system can conduct real-time web searches. When clients ask HRGPT a question, it scans the web for real-time information and citations." Additionally, the platform collaborates with PwC to provide expertise in employment law.

The investment from the co-founders of Cohere reflects a growing interest among businesses in vertical industry AI applications. While consumer AI tools like ChatGPT have captured public attention, Cross believes that companies will accelerate the adoption of AI technology over the next two to three years. There are many applicable use cases in the HR field, and Borderless AI aims to realize its ambitious vision by automating complex HR processes, such as payroll management and employee analytics. Cross revealed that their goal is to build a billion-dollar company with fewer than 50 employees, fully leveraging AI technology.

However, Borderless AI also faces numerous challenges, including prioritizing which features to develop next under strong customer demand and ensuring accuracy and compliance in automating HR functions, especially for sensitive tasks like employment agreements and international payments. Currently, the company's early clients report that their AI assistant is handling multiple tasks daily.
