Recently, Samsung officially announced its collaboration with Google to develop an augmented reality (AR) headset, confirming earlier rumors. This partnership was revealed just before Samsung's upcoming "Galaxy Unpacked" event, indicating that these two tech giants will engage in fierce competition in the AR field, joining the ranks of Apple and Meta.

According to reports, the collaboration between Samsung and Google will focus on jointly developing an operating system called Android XR. This operating system will provide a unified platform for smart glasses from different brands, encouraging more developers to participate in the development of AR devices. This initiative also opens opportunities for other developers to create AR products compatible with the Android ecosystem.

As Samsung enters the AR market, its experience in the wearable device sector undoubtedly lays a solid foundation. Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Ring, marking its entry into the wearable market, making its move into AR seem like a natural progression. However, Samsung has not yet provided a clear timeline for the release of specific products. TM Roh, President of Samsung's Mobile Experience Division, stated in an interview that the company aims to achieve ideal product quality and maturity as soon as possible, but there are currently no updates on prototypes.

In addition to developing glasses and head-mounted devices, the collaboration between Samsung and Google will also showcase various integration features with Google Gemini in its Galaxy S25 smartphone. These new features will enhance the multimodal AI capabilities of the devices and improve the user experience within the Samsung device ecosystem.

Despite the strong potential of the Samsung-Google partnership, developing AR wearable devices still faces numerous challenges. Lightweight design and reducing production costs are pressing issues for the development team to address. For example, Meta has opted to externalize most processing components in its new AR glasses, highlighting the technical difficulties commonly faced in the industry.
