Google Search is conducting internal testing of a new feature called "AI Mode," designed to provide users with a "persistent space" where they can ask more open-ended and exploratory questions. This new experience is based on Google's Gemini 2.0 technology and is currently being tested among employees.

According to internal emails, "AI Mode" elevates intelligent search capabilities to a new level, helping users organize information for easy digestion and providing links to explore related content on the web. This mode is specifically targeted at open-ended and exploratory questions that current search results may not adequately address. For example, users can ask questions that require suggestions and comparisons, or engage in follow-up conversations with the system.

Google has provided employees with some example questions to demonstrate the applications of "AI Mode." For instance, users might ask: "How many boxes of pasta should I buy to serve 6 adults and 10 children?" or "Compare the pros and cons of wool, down, and synthetic jackets in terms of insulation, waterproofing, and durability." Additionally, users can ask follow-up questions such as: "What materials do I need to start aquascaping?" and then inquire: "Which stores nearby sell these materials?"

"AI Mode" utilizes a "custom version" of Gemini 2.0, featuring "advanced reasoning and thinking capabilities." Although the user interface has not been finalized, employees can already see an "early release" desktop experience of this feature, which is also applicable on mobile devices.

When using "AI Mode," users still enter queries and press search, alongside existing filtering options for images, news, shopping, etc., there is also an "AI Mode" option. Upon clicking, users are taken to a chat-like interface displaying their search content, with answers shown at the bottom of the full-screen interface, which is broader than the current AI overview. Unlike traditional blue links, this interface does not display such links; instead, a card on the right provides links for "deeper web" exploration. This interface is similar to the AI overview design launched last year, and future versions of AI Mode will feature richer designs.

At the bottom of the answers, there is a text box for users to "ask follow-up questions," and the Google app on both Android and iOS supports voice input. Currently, "AI Mode" is being tested with Google employees in the U.S., and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has stated that 2025 will be a significant year for search innovation, with this feature expected to launch this year.
