Just weeks after OpenAI adopted a rival's standard for connecting AI models to the systems holding their data, Google has followed suit.
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday that Google will add support for Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) to its Gemini model and software development kit (SDK). He didn't provide a specific timeline.
In his post, Hassabis wrote: "MCP is a great protocol and is rapidly becoming an open standard for the age of AI agents. Looking forward to further developing it with the MCP team and other industry players."
MCP allows AI models to pull data from various sources, including business tools, software, content repositories, and application development environments, to complete specific tasks. The protocol empowers developers to establish two-way connections between data sources and AI applications like chatbots.
Developers can expose data by building "MCP servers" and create "MCP clients" (such as applications and workflows) that connect to these servers based on instructions. Since Anthropic open-sourced MCP, several companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have integrated MCP support into their platforms.
