Google announced this week that it will add digital watermarks to images edited using its Magic Editor AI feature. This watermark is specifically designed for images modified using the Reimagine feature on Pixel 9 devices. The launch of this new feature aims to enhance the public's ability to identify AI-generated and edited content.

The Reimagine feature, announced in 2024, utilizes generative AI technology to make various modifications to digital photos. This feature is similar to other functionalities of the Magic Editor, aimed at enhancing images taken on the device. However, the use of AI has made image editing more extreme, blurring the lines between digital photos and completely AI-generated images.

As generative AI images become increasingly realistic, digital advocates are calling for a universal approach to help the public discern whether a photo is entirely AI-created or has been edited. Digital watermarks are often seen as a potential solution to this issue, as they can be added to the file without directly altering the image itself.

Google will use the SynthID technology developed by its DeepMind division to tag the relevant images. This technology can "embed digital watermarks directly into AI-generated content without affecting the original content." Currently, SynthID can also be used to scan images for potential watermarks. This feature is still in the testing phase and can also be used with AI-generated text and video files.

Users can view the metadata of a photo by clicking on "About this image" to locate the digital watermark. Google also noted that not all edits will trigger the use of SynthID. For example, if a user only changes the color of a small flower in the background, it may not be marked or detected by SynthID.

The launch of this feature is part of Google's broader effort to promote AI editing transparency within Google Photos. Google stated that its published AI principles serve as guidelines for such decisions.
