Google DeepMind, Google's AI research lab, recently announced DolphinGemma, a new AI model designed to help researchers decipher dolphin vocalizations. This innovative achievement significantly aids our understanding of dolphin communication.

DolphinGemma's training data comes from the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), a non-profit organization dedicated to studying Atlantic spotted dolphins and their behavior. Built upon Google's open-source Gemma model family, DolphinGemma can generate dolphin-like sound sequences and runs efficiently on mobile phones.

According to Google, WDP plans to use Google Pixel 9 smartphones this summer to build a platform for creating synthetic dolphin sounds and matching them with dolphin responses. Previously using Pixel 6 for this research, the upgrade to Pixel 9 allows researchers to run the AI model and template matching algorithms simultaneously, improving research efficiency and accuracy.
