Recently, Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video titled "Trump Gaza" on his social media platform, Truth Social. The video depicts the war-torn Gaza Strip transformed into a Dubai-like resort paradise. It shows a family emerging from rubble into a high-rise beachfront resort, while Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu sip cocktails on lounge chairs, with Elon Musk snacking on pita bread nearby.
The video's creator, Los Angeles-based filmmaker Solo Avital, described it as a political satire of Trump's purported "Gaza real estate development plan." This plan allegedly aims to build Gaza into a "Riviera of the Middle East," even suggesting the displacement of the approximately 2 million residents. Avital created the video using AI tools in February this year, completing it in under eight hours. He was surprised by its rapid spread.
Avital noted that the video was shared without their consent or authorization. He and his business partner, Ariel Froman, had shared it privately, but after realizing its potential to be misinterpreted, they suggested its retraction. Despite this, Trump posted it on social media without explanation.
Avital received thousands of messages on social media from friends alerting him to Trump's sharing of the video. His reaction highlighted the media's interpretation of the video as completely contrary to his original intent. He hopes this experience will spark a public discussion about the rights and responsibilities surrounding the use of generative AI.
Hany Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley, also commented on the incident, noting that AI-generated videos will become increasingly common in the future and highlighting the potential risks of this technology. He warned of the potential influx of fabricated content online, impacting public understanding.
Avital remains optimistic about AI, believing it can fuel creativity, but acknowledges the need for proper regulation to prevent its misuse.
