OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the company will support the Model Context Protocol (MCP) developed by its competitor, Anthropic. This standard aims to improve the accuracy and relevance of AI assistants' responses to specific queries.
Altman stated that OpenAI will integrate MCP into several of its products, including the ChatGPT desktop application. He noted, "The response to MCP has been fantastic, and we're excited to add support for it in our products." He also revealed that MCP is currently available in the Agents SDK and will be rolled out to the ChatGPT desktop app and response API in the future.
MCP's primary function is to allow models to fetch information from various data sources, such as business tools, software, and content repositories, to better accomplish tasks. This protocol offers developers a way to establish a two-way connection, enabling them to link data sources with AI applications like chatbots. Developers can provide data through "MCP servers" and build "MCP clients," such as applications and workflows, to connect to these servers when needed.
Since Anthropic open-sourced MCP, several companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have added support for it to their platforms. Anthropic's Chief Product Officer, Mike Krieger, stated on X, "Thrilled to see the MCP momentum spreading to OpenAI – welcome aboard!" He further pointed out that MCP has become a thriving open standard with thousands of integrations, and that large language models realize their full potential when connected to existing data and software.
OpenAI stated that it will share more details about its MCP plans in the coming months, and the industry eagerly anticipates further information.
