According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft has incurred significant losses on its first generative AI service, GitHub Copilot. The report states that since the launch of Copilot, Microsoft has been operating at a heavy loss on the service, with an average loss of over $20 per user in the first few months of this year, and some users causing monthly losses as high as $80. Microsoft has been seeking cheaper ways to run AI services, including developing its own AI chips. Additionally, Microsoft plans to launch Microsoft 365 Copilot for enterprise users in November, priced at $30 per user per month. The WSJ report indicates that GitHub Copilot has not brought the expected revenue to Microsoft, but has instead become a major financial drain.
