British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is planning to invest up to £100 million in purchasing thousands of high-performance artificial intelligence chips to keep up with the global race in computing power. The initiative, led by the government's science funding body UK Research and Innovation, has reached the preparatory stage for acquiring up to 5,000 graphic processing units (GPUs), which are Nvidia chips capable of powering AI models like ChatGPT. A review published by the UK government this year criticized the lack of "dedicated AI computing resources," with researchers needing less than 1,000 high-end Nvidia chips. The report recommended providing at least 3,000 "top-tier" GPUs as soon as possible. The UK government aims to leverage these GPUs by constructing an "AI research resource," which is slated to commence operations by next summer.
