OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, recently spoke at her alma mater, Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering, delving into the future of artificial intelligence, the next generation of ChatGPT, and its doctorate-level intelligence. Murati stated that GPT-3 possesses toddler-level intelligence, GPT-4 has the intelligence of a high school student, and the next iteration of the model will have doctorate-level intelligence in specific tasks.

She also revealed that the next generation of GPT is expected to be released within "a year and a half." She even suggested that when conversing with the next-generation chatbot, you might feel it is smarter than you in many aspects.

During the event, the moderator asked, "If in three years, when GPT becomes incredibly intelligent, could it decide to connect to the internet and start acting on its own? As OpenAI's CTO, are you considering this issue?"

Murati responded, "Yes, we are seriously contemplating this. There will indeed be AI systems with agency capabilities, connecting to the internet, interacting with each other, communicating among themselves to complete tasks, or collaborating seamlessly with humans. It's akin to how we cooperate with each other today, but with AI."

"In terms of safety and societal impact, I believe these issues are not to be considered after the fact. You can develop technology and then figure out how to address these issues. You must build these considerations in parallel with the technology, and do so in a deeply embedded manner. Moreover, in terms of capability and safety, they are not separate domains; they are complementary. By instructing smarter systems to perform only these tasks, they are easier to guide safely. It's easier than training a less intelligent system. It's a bit like training a smarter dog versus a less intelligent one, so intelligence and safety are complementary," Murati added.

Essentially, OpenAI's CTO indicated that future AI systems will be able to connect to the internet, interact with each other, and collaborate with humans. However, she emphasized that smarter AI systems are easier to control and guide safely.

Meanwhile, Murati also stated that "zero risk" is impossible, especially for technology like AI. In response to a question about deepfake videos, she noted that while the responsibility lies with OpenAI as the technology is theirs, users, civil society, governments, and content creators also bear responsibility. "It's our responsibility in how we use it, but also a shared responsibility of society, civil society, government, content creators, etc., to figure out how to use it."

The biggest impact of ChatGPT is making everyone aware of AI. It has shown people the capabilities and risks of AI. Reading about AI is different from actually using it in business. When you try to use it, you understand its limitations but also see its amazing capabilities, helping you understand what it means for your work or business, according to Murati. However, if we talk about the overall impact of AI on industries, Murati believes it will "affect everything." She is convinced that almost every field will be impacted, and certain jobs will be affected, especially creative ones.

Regarding jobs, Murati thinks that some will definitely be impacted, especially "some creative jobs," but she also believes that these jobs "shouldn't exist in the first place." The OpenAI CTO stated that the next generation of AI will lower the threshold for "creativity," making it no longer exclusive to "talented individuals." AI will make everyone more creative. Thus, some jobs that were once limited to a few creative individuals will be taken over by AI.
