Recently, leading artificial intelligence company OpenAI announced the launch of fine-tuning capabilities for its new small-scale model, GPT-4o mini, aimed at enhancing the model's performance in specific application scenarios. This move will provide developers and enterprise users with more customized AI solutions.
According to official OpenAI news, from today until September 23, users can fine-tune GPT-4o mini for free up to 2 million training tokens per day. Any excess will be charged at $3.00 per million tokens. After September 24, all fine-tuning training will be billed at $3.00 per million tokens.
OpenAI emphasizes several advantages of GPT-4o mini over GPT-3.5 Turbo:
- Higher cost-effectiveness: The input token fee for GPT-4o mini is 90% lower than GPT-3.5 Turbo, and the output token fee is 80% lower. Even after the free period ends, its training cost is still 50% lower than GPT-3.5 Turbo.
- Longer context: The training context length of GPT-4o mini is 65k tokens, which is 4 times that of GPT-3.5 Turbo; the inference context length reaches 128k tokens, which is 8 times that of GPT-3.5 Turbo.
- More powerful capabilities: OpenAI states that GPT-4o mini is not only smarter than GPT-3.5 Turbo but also supports visual functions (currently, fine-tuning is limited to text).
This fine-tuning feature is open to enterprise customers and developers at Tier4 and Tier5 usage levels. Users can access the fine-tuning dashboard and select "gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18" as the base model to start the free fine-tuning.
OpenAI also provides users with detailed fine-tuning documentation and a "How to Fine-Tune Chat Models" guide to ensure that users can make full use of this new feature. For any questions, users can seek help on the OpenAI developer forum.
Industry experts believe that the launch of GPT-4o mini and the opening of the fine-tuning function will further lower the threshold for AI applications and promote the birth of more innovative applications. This is not only beneficial for the prosperity of the developer community but also provides more possibilities for the AI implementation in various industries.
OpenAI's move once again demonstrates its leading position in the AI field and reflects the company's commitment to making AI technology more widespread and user-friendly. With the promotion of the fine-tuning function, we have reason to expect that in the near future, we will see more innovative applications based on GPT-4o mini emerge.
