Recent reports suggest IKEA may be actively expanding its smart home product line and embracing the latest Matter connectivity standard. According to homewithapple, an image purportedly showing an unreleased IKEA Bilresa Dual Button has surfaced. This smart switch features two independently programmable buttons; notably, early information indicates it will use the Thread protocol, rather than the currently prevalent Matter smart home standard.
For a long time, most of IKEA's smart home products have relied on the Zigbee protocol, connecting through their Matter-compatible Dirigera hub. If the Bilresa ultimately uses the Thread protocol, it would be the second rumored IKEA device to utilize this technology. Previously, the company registered a device called Timmerflotte, reportedly a Matter-over-Thread enabled temperature sensor.
Although early information points to Thread, considering IKEA's active push for Matter support in its devices, whether the Bilresa will directly support Matter-over-Thread or bridge Thread devices through the Dirigera hub remains to be officially confirmed. However, these indications show IKEA is actively exploring and adopting emerging connectivity technologies to further integrate into the future smart home ecosystem.
