Xiaopeng Motors chairman He Xiaopeng recently revealed in an interview with the South China Morning Post that the company's self-developed Turing AI chip is expected to enter mass production in the second quarter of 2025 and be applied to vehicles. This chip will not only support Xiaopeng's L4 autonomous driving but also be used in the company's upcoming AI robots and flying cars.
Xiaopeng Motors announced the successful tape-out of the Turing chip last August. The chip boasts 40 cores and can run AI large models with up to 30 billion parameters, aiming to provide powerful computing capabilities for higher-level autonomous driving technology. According to reports from February this year, the Turing chip is expected to debut in a new vehicle model in May, marking Xiaopeng's first vehicle to use its self-developed chip.
Insiders revealed that the computing power of a single Turing chip significantly surpasses Nvidia's Orin X, approaching the yet-to-be-mass-produced mid-range version of Thor. The chip's performance is considered ideal for Xiaopeng's needs, offering a much better price-performance ratio than the Thor chip. Xiaopeng Motors is now largely independent of Nvidia, with all future new models set to be equipped with its own Turing chip.
Xiaopeng Motors also stated at its launch event that the deep customization of the Turing chip will maximize computing power utilization. Future AI vehicles will be equipped with at least three Turing chips to ensure powerful capabilities in autonomous driving and intelligent cockpits.
