Microsoft recently launched an AI-driven Windows search feature in the latest development channel version for Windows 11 Insider testers. This new feature was first announced in October and aims to utilize semantic indexing technology to help users search for local files using more natural language. It is important to note that users must have a Copilot Plus PC to access this feature.
This AI search feature can be applied to the search box in "Settings," "File Explorer," or the taskbar, allowing users to enjoy this convenience no matter where they search. Additionally, thanks to the NPU chip in Copilot Plus computers, this technology supports offline use without needing an internet connection. Currently, the AI search feature is mainly limited to Windows settings and specific file formats, including JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS.
Microsoft states that the search function is only available for indexed locations chosen by the user. Users can adjust the indexing location in "Settings" > "Privacy & Security" > "Search Windows," or enable the "Enhanced" feature to index the entire computer. In the future, this feature is expected to expand to include cloud data, such as files stored in OneDrive.
According to Microsoft, this AI-driven Windows search feature will gradually roll out to Copilot Plus PCs using Snapdragon processors, with plans to support Intel and AMD processor-based Copilot Plus computers in the future. Additionally, the feature supports multiple languages, including Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, to meet the needs of different users.
In addition to the new search feature, the latest version also includes an AI writing tool provided by Click to Do. When users press and hold the Windows key and left-click on the screen, a context-sensitive options menu will pop up. Users can select a block of text and click "Rewrite," then choose the "Optimize" option for grammar correction, further enhancing the accuracy and fluency of the text.
